Fjord

Winner of the prestigious Palme d’Or at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, Fjord is a gripping courtroom drama from writer-director Cristian Mungiu (Graduation, R.M.N.), driven by a profound moral dilemma.

In the latest from acclaimed filmmaker Cristian Mungiu, Lisbet (Renate Reinsve, Sentimental Value) and Mihai Gheorghiu (Sebastian Stan, Dumb Money) are a conservative Christian couple who’ve relocated from Romania to an isolated Norwegian town with their five children.

Unlike their new neighbours, the Gheorghius enforce daily Bible study and don’t allow their children access to smartphones or YouTube. The family’s rigid beliefs cause a stir when one of their children criticizes another student’s sexual orientation at school. This, however, is just the beginning of the family’s problems. When a teacher notices bruises on their eldest daughter, Elia, a cascade of events is set in motion.

Unlike her strong-willed husband, Lisbet, Norwegian by birth, is fluent in the local language and adept at navigating cultural nuances. Meanwhile, Mihai, steadfast in what he sees as his right to educate his children as he sees fit, admits to occasional spanking. As the family comes under investigation, their private lives and deeply held beliefs become the subject of intense public scrutiny, raising difficult questions about parental rights, religious freedom, and the responsibilities of the state.

Shot by frequent Mungiu collaborator Tudor Vladimir Panduru, Fjord is an intricate, gripping drama that challenges audiences to confront conflicting perspectives on family, faith, and justice. Nearly two decades after his acclaimed 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days helped bring international attention to the Romanian New Wave, Mungiu once again delivers a powerful examination of moral ambiguity and institutional authority.
